#0040 Author Life: The Creative (Accountant) Soul

August marked a significant milestone in my life. As of August 1st, I officially took ownership of a CPA firm in Tullahoma, Tennessee. Much of August was spent rebranding the business, coordinating with software vendors, and tackling various administrative tasks—those "fun" business activities that come with the territory.

Reflecting on my journey, creativity has always been a core part of who I am. From a young age, I was constantly drawing stick figures and letting my imagination run wild. I’m grateful that my parents encouraged this creativity, fostering an environment where I could explore and develop my artistic side. During my teenage years, I continued to draw, even dabbling in comic creation. While my early works weren’t masterpieces, they were filled with ideas and a raw, creative energy. Art classes quickly became my favorite escape.

When it came time for college, I was torn between pursuing a creative career and choosing a path that would ensure job security after graduation. Ultimately, I opted for accounting, putting my creative pursuits on hold to focus on earning my degree.

After graduation, I was fortunate to land a job quickly, preparing spreadsheets and workpapers for tax returns and audits. At first glance, it might not seem like a creative outlet, but I found a certain satisfaction in the design elements—formatting, font choices, layout decisions, and even the organization of data. It might sound odd, but there’s a creative aspect to designing anything, whether it’s the layout of a document, the arrangement of a desk, the organization of computer icons, or the language of an email. I’ve learned to find creativity in the everyday tasks of the office. Sometimes, it’s the small things that keep us going.

Nearly a decade into my career, I rekindled my creative passion by starting ZanderverZ. Balancing this with my professional life can be challenging, but the rewards are immense whenever I complete a project.

And now, here I am, drafting my newest novel after designing the logo for my CPA firm. It's an amazing feeling seeing the logo I designed on a sign beside a main road in town. Life truly is a crazy journey. Who knows what’s next? Whatever comes, I hope I never put my creativity on hold again. There’s nothing more important than doing what you love.

CURRENTLY LISTENING:

Correction: Currently Watching: Natural Born Killers. Speaking of being creative, this movie is a prime example. I originally found it because NIN does a song for the movie. This is probably my third or fourth time watching it. The movie is intense with violence and profanity, while at the same time, it's a visual masterpiece, unlike anything else. I highly recommend it.
