#0047 Author Life: The Overwhelming Season of Taxes

...there's nothing here. Where did my author life go? It's call tax season.

As an accountant, my life revolves around tax returns during this time. March has been ridiculously busy. I get to work around 8 AM and leave around 8 PM. That's a long day. Sometimes, I see my wife for a few hours during the weekend. Maybe we watch a movie, but nothing to write home about. On the bright side, there's only about two weeks left. Then, I'll be free (kinda).
So, why is tax season so busy for accountants? The answer is fairly simple. Most accounting firms are understaffed. Why would you staff for 12-hour workdays when the average workday outside of tax season is 8 hours or less? The only accounting firms that are properly staffed are the ones that fire lots of people after tax season, and I refuse to do that.
Another reason is that, for some reason or another, everyone likes to bring their tax work in on the same day. Thirty returns will come in on one day during tax season, and then we have to scramble to get them all out in a timely manner, while the rest of the week one or two more arrive. It would help if the government gave us more time. Of course, people would still procrastinate until the last few months, and we'd be here in the same boat. Good times!
Regardless of the reason, tax season is a busy time for tax preparers, and I'm no exception. Somehow, I've managed to keep up the minimum amount of ZanderverZ productions, the blog, Patreon posts, and some social media posts, but it's been tough. And this month, well, it's been extra tough. Right now, it's 7 PM, and I'm doing this blog between tax returns. Woo!
I think I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, but it's probably just a car with someone else coming to drop off their tax papers.
